Doing synthetic biology with photosynthetic microorganisms

The use of photosynthetic microbes as synthetic biology hosts for the sustainable production commodity chemicals and even fuels has received increasing attention over last decade. number studies published, tools implemented, resources made available microalgae have increased beyond expectations during few years. However, genetic engineering in these organisms still lag those more commonly used heterotrophic host organisms. In this mini-review, we provide an overview most studies, namely cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, eustigmatophytes diatoms. We basic information on techniques each model group organisms, outline state-of-the-art, list that been successfully used. specifically focus latest CRISPR developments, believe precision editing advanced will be pivotal to advancement field. Finally, discuss relative strengths weaknesses examine challenges need overcome achieve their potential.
